My Quiet Space

So I'm a Texas girl that eats red meat... I've even recently tried wild pig much to my dismay, mainly only to not offend a very close friend/business associate of my husbands. Imagine my surprise when I absolutely LOVED IT!! I honestly could not tell it was wild. I promise that I can not be tricked no matter how you "fix" deer meat. I KNOW the difference. Deer meat is the main reason I was hesitant to try wild pig.

So NYE weekend we go visit his buddy and they tell us they are going down in "the bottoms" to shoot the pigs they trapped. Me, being the redneck wife I am, and not wanting to appear as a wussy agree to ride VIA the glorified golfcart (AKA Gator) to the site of the captive swine to be slaughtered. I also didn't want to appear hypocritical to have eaten the meat, without appreciating the process they went through for us to have enjoyed it weeks prior.
We arrive to find a small pig and a large pig in the trap. I'm informed that they are only shooting one of them. I assume that since they told me when I ate it, that "it's all in how you dress out the pig.. you can't let it lay around" that they didn't want to have two pigs to deal with, and would let the smaller one go. WRONG. I was told to climb up as high as I could because the pigs are PISSED and will attack when they get out of the cage. (Especially because they were just in the cage when a load boom went off and killed the critter next to them)
So I take a quick shot of his buddy aiming at the pigs with my lil digital, then climb as quickly as possible on top of the gator. He took one shot while I was climbing on top with his wife, I turned to see what was still making so much noise in the cage and see the baby pig flopping around.. HORROR!!! The mom is nipping at the baby pig that is lying on it's side but still bouncing around from the nerves. The men climb on top of the trap, and open the front and poke at the mom with a stick to make her leave the cage so they can safely remove the baby. At this point, I'm in shock, but trying not to let it show. The mom licked at the baby's blood before running out of the cage. They were all saying "look how mean that sow is" Well NO SHIT, SHERLOCK.. you just killed her baby right beside her! Ughh..

So we had to drive the gator back to their place with the baby pig in the back. I can't help but feel there's an angry momma pig somewhere in Cumby that want's revenge. I told my husband that it did get to me.. he said "yeah, but did you see how she was biting at the baby and licking the blood? Those things are MEAN!"
I explained that I felt she was nipping at the baby to make it stop jumping around.. maybe we'd all go away. She lapped the blood because she had been trapped in the cage for god knows how long, and was thirsty as hell. All I know is, if I hadn't already tasted how good wild pig was, I would NEVER in a million years eat it again. But damn, bacon is good.
From now on, I want as far from the killing and butchering side of the whole process as possible. It eats at your soul to see that kind of thing...

Wow! That sounds bad. Poor pig.

Sometimes I wish I had stayed vegetarian.

You are a brave woman, my friend. I always cover my ears when it comes time for people to share how food is "prepared".

I'm like you, I love it, but don't want any part of the process.

This is why I was a vegetarian for four years. I figured, if I wasn't willing to be the one to kill it and prepare it, I wasn't going to eat it. *sigh*

And now I know to NEVER EVER go out on any hunting trips with DH or his buddies. EVER.

Thanks for the warning - and no-nightmare-vibes to you!
